determined it was time to replace an admittedly aging set of dolls with a new, more up-to-date iteration.
Initially, the decision seemed questionable at best. While the
idea of revitalizing the camp's relationship with American Girl was
fascinating, at what cost? Wasn't there a limit to how much one
could spend on dolls and books before the novelty wore off?
These questions were put aside, however, once it was determined that, in order to do a good job of creating a new cast of dolls, a set of rules had to be put into place. Among them:
No "extra" girls. Why pay for yet another "special" girl when so many other girls can fill the void?
No
"duplicates." We're talking about American Girl dolls, for
God's sake; it's totally reasonable to think that one girl
wouldn't be enough to portray a full range of interest for young
girlhood.
No "special" families. Enough with the wealthy parents, and wealthy kids for that matter, and their idiosyncratic behavior. Make it about the girls.
No changes in body type, period. Yes, it is fun to make a "goth" American Girl, but we're trying to give them "regular" bodies. (This rule was actually a bit of a non-starter with a certain ex-employee, but hey, it was worth a try.)
No dolls representing an underrepresented ethnicity. We've done some good with the Native American Girls, but we wanted to use a different group for a while, and that's where the Japanese Girl came from.
Finally, there is a rule for the reference photos: No one over 18.
The second episode of a brand new series was shooting last week, and the newly chosen cast of seven American Girls is finally here!
We're starting off with our first set of two dolls, Karen and Danielle, both of whom hail from southern New Jersey. Danielle is a natural blonde who loves dancing and shopping, and Karen is a natural brunette who loves music and swimming.
